The Treatment

Embryo Transfer Acupuncture

Embryo transfer day is crucial in IVF. It usually brings mixed emotions – including excitement, anxiety, fear – and a lot of stress. Research indicates that increased stress levels lead to a lower number of fertilized eggs and successful pregnancies. This treatment stimulates the autonomic nervous system. From an energetic viewpoint, it also relaxes the muscles of the uterus, and increases the flow of Qi – or energy – in the uterus and supports the endometrium. It also induces physical and mental relaxation for the woman prior to the transfer.

Acupuncture may support Embryo Transfers by:

  • Improving blood flow to the cervix, uterus and ovaries, optimizing chances of easy implantation and a healthy, full term pregnancy
  • Settling the nervous system and reducing stress – this will help you relax before, during and after the procedure
  • Minimize symptoms common after embryo transfers

How is it done?

If you’re looking for support during your Embryo Transfer, I will travel to your hotel and provide acupuncture in comfort of your hotel room. My clients love it because it is very comfortable and we can avoid all the stresful situations with their traveling around the city.

The protocol I use before and after transfers is done in two sessions during the day of the transfer. I try to make every acupuncture as close to the time of the transfer as possible. That way the transfer is done when the client is still deeply relaxed and blood in uterus flows optimally which maximises the chances for a successful transfer.

Beyond the basic approach

I highly recommend taking special Chinese herbs – which I give every client during our second session – and another acupuncture session 4 days after the transfer to further assist implantation, then weekly sessions until 12 weeks gestation. By continuing to stimulate blood flow to the blastocyst, acupuncture helps to maintain the health and strength of the blastocyst-corpus-luteum relationship, thereby maintaining the proper level of progesterone. Then, after six weeks, your placenta takes over the role of secreting progesterone. Acupuncture stimulates blood flow to the placenta helping it to do its job of protecting and nourishing your growing baby. One major reason for miscarriage is in appropriated blood flow to the placenta.
